Recession… Or Correction? 2022 Economic Update for Metro Denver

September 2022

We are in the midst of an economic situation, but we don’t know whether this should be called a recession or a correction. A recession implies a broad-based downturn in economic activity and is often viewed as an unfavorable or scary event. A correction, on the other hand, implies a potentially welcome change to get the economic system back to an equilibrium or trend position. What best describes our current position?

This economic update covers national, state, and local indicators, or “Patty’s Top 10 Economic Measures to Watch,” ranging from inflation and consumer spending to employment and construction activity. Unless the National Bureau of Economic Research officially declares this a recession, I am calling this a correction that needed to happen after the global economic turmoil that was created by the COVID pandemic.
